Photography Tips – by Jesse Kalisher

Sometimes youtube can be actually useful and a lot more than a waste of time. I came across a series of six photography videos by Jesse Kalisher. In those videos he explains his approaches for taking pictures in certain situations. If you are still new to photography like me then there is a lot to learn and take from those videos. The videos are very different from the usual tutorial and tips stuff one finds in books and the internet. The focus of the videos doesn’t lie on technical details or step by step guides to do something. Jesse rather challenges you to think about your photography.

What he is saying might appeal to everyone differently depending on what interests you or on what your focus on photography lies.
Here is what I took from the videos:

  • Always try to tell a story – Find what interests you and make the photograph tell exactly this
  • Get past the moment of Awe – Don’t just take any picture of a beautiful scene or landscape, get over the beauty and challenge yourself to find and photograph what is really important – something to tell a story
  • Include and focus on the little details – Find what is really going on and photograph it from a different perspective.
  • Photography can mean work – Be patient and prepared. For example, know how light changes and be prepared to wait for the right light (or come back again).
  • Telling a story isn’t everything – Find a balance between content/story and style.
  • Know your tools, take a lot of pictures and always keep on going and learning.
